Product Description
This coin is thefirst release in the
Forgotten Cities
coin series by the New Zealand Mint. Only 2,000 Machu Picchu coins are being minted by the New Zealand Mint.
The Story:
Machu Picchu is hidden away 2,430 metres (7,970 ft) above sea level, deep in the mountains of Peru. It is said that this forgotten city of the Incas was built as an estate for the Emperor Pachacuti. Built around 1450 A.D. the city was abandoned a century later at the time of the Spanish Conquest. Nestled on a small hilltop between the Andean Mountain Range and the sacred Urubamba Valley far below, the majestic city was slowly lost to memory. Centuries passed. While local people knew of the site, it was never discovered by the Spanish conquerors. Then one cold day in 1911, the story is told that a local Peruvian guide led Professor Hiram Bingham up a steep mountainside, making him the first Western scholar to ever lay eyes on this forgotten city. To this day, many of Machu Picchu’s mysteries remain unresolved and lost to history. In 1983 Machu Picchu was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Coin:
The reverse of this proof quality coin captures the mystique of the forgotten city of Machu Picchu. Recorded on the coin is the engraved longitude and latitude of this historic location. This features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Forgotten Cities: Machu Picchu 1 oz Silver coin is packaged in an impressive explorer-themed travel journal coin case, which holds the clue to the next coin release in this series; Find the Longitude and Latitude of the next Forgotten Cities release within the packaging! The Certificate of Authenticity is incorporated within the packaging.
New Zealand Mint:
The New Zealand Mint is a privately owned company in Auckland, New Zealand. It is the only privately owned mint in New Zealand, purchasing refined gold from international sources to produce coins. They have established their reputation over the past four decades for their high quality design as exhibited by their innovative commemorative gold and silver bullion products. The only precious metal mint in New Zealand, the mint uses the tag-line “Minters of the South Pacific” and produces collector and bullion coins for a number of pacific nations, including Fiji, the Cook Islands, Niue and Tuvalu.
