MAGNIFICENT ANTIQUE JAPANESE BRONZE USUBATA VASE
BIRDS IN HOKUSAI STYLE WAVES DESIGN
Edo / Meiji Period (1800's)
Exquisite, nineteenth century Japanese bronze vase of finest quality. Striking form featuring a highly detailed Hokusai style waves, splashing vigorously around the base. When the viewer looks carefully, they will find two small birds playing joyfully in the water. The casting is absolutely magnificent, with dramatic motion in the swirling waters. Both artistic and harmonious in the traditional Japanese aesthetic, and changes wonderfully in the light.
Traditionally used to display Ikebana flower arrangements in the tea room, today this would make an excellent vase, unique candle holder, or fascinating conversation piece. A wonderful work of art from the age of the Shogun and Samurai. In excellent antique condition bearing a deep reddish brown patina and surface wear commensurate with age. Of significant size, measuring approximately 10.75 inches across and 7 inches high. Most likely commissioned for a Daimyo or wealthy samurai family nearly two centuries ago, the vase is signed on the underside. We have not yet translated the signature, however it is certainly the work of one of the top artisans of the period. A sublime centerpiece for the discriminating connoisseur of world-class Japanese antiques.
