Description
This is an antique Japaneselate Meiji Era (c.1900)
lidded container which was probably used to hold a ladies jewelry and valuable. It has a dragon wrapped around the top in heavy relief with plover (birds) flying over waves around the outsides. In Japan plovers flying over waves is a symbol of returning home after a long and arduous journey. On the bottom there is a signature of the Japanese casting artist (see picture 9 & 10).
On the bottom (see picture 9) some rub through is showing indicating that this container may be made of pewter with t copper wash which now has an age darkened patina. The interior has a red silk liner. Other than a very dark aged patina, this lidded container is in very good condition. It measures 3 1/2" in diameter by 1 1/2" high. The lid comes off easily and fits very perfectly on the base.
