A Ryukyu lacquer ware vase from Okinawa, Japan.The Ryukyu lacquer ware derived from the technique originally developed around the 1500's by the influence of China. The Ryukyu Kingdom (present day Okinawa) was an independent kingdom that ruled most of the Okinawa islands from the 14th century to the 19th century. China had treated the Ryukyu kingdom with the utmost respect and the very active trades with China had brought a great amount of Chinese culture and crafts to the kingdom. In 1609, the court of Shuri established a lacquer ware workshop and this led to the production of goods which were both technically and artistically of a high standard. Most of the Ryukyu lacquer ware is of a type with a highly polished final coat in either vermilion or black like this particular piece and decorated with various techniques.The base woods are exotic Okinawan trees such as Deigo (Erythrina variegata var. orientalis), Snowbell (Styrax Linn.) and Bean Tree (Melia Linn.) and the brilliance of the vermilion in particular is unsurpassed even compared to the Japanese mainland lacquers.
A great object for study or display, this will make a nice addition to any student or appreciators collection of Japanese art and artifacts.
