A GREAT PIECE THAT EXEMPLIFIES SATSUMA DESIGNS!
This sensational Japanese Satsuma vase has everything a collector
could dream of!  First, the subject matter of the vase is a group of
young Japanese high society girls playing GO - an ancient pastime of
aristocrats! In the mid 19th century postcards of Japanese girls playing GO
were made to illustrate life in Japan.
What really sets this work apart from other pieces is how
sweet and benevolent the artist has depicted their faces!
This vase couldn't act as a better advertisement for life in 19th
century Japan!  They are absolutely adorable!
Second, this vase is a moriage tour de force! The raised dots completely
give this piece a texture throughout! Multiple colors and even gilded
moriage is employed in making this piece unlike any other!  We've never
encountered Satsuma with as much moriage as this vase! Third, we have the
use of Gosu Blue, a coveted color that makes the art work really pop
and stand out - framing it with this intense dark blue!  Works with
this color were originally known as "Imperial Satsuma" and add
another iconic layer to this simply wonderful vase!
Critics believed that Satsuma wares were selling out to Western tastes
but in reality Satsuma pieces predicted and personified the future
success Japan would have in the world - marketing wares globally.
This vase with its unparalleled amount of gilding throughout
and beautiful women surrounded by beautiful flowers
is the archetype of Satsuma vases!
A must have for the dedicated Satsuma collector!

on bottom but markings are no longer legible.
