    Description

This stunning and naturalistic vase was acquired several years ago for research and documentation purposes.  I needed to find additional examples that clearly showed the intricate silver foil designs, in this work, delicate leaves that were applied to the foundation and finished with a clear enamel.
The vase has the characteristic quality of the underlying leaves raising the enamel layer ever so slightly.  This raised enamel can be readily felt when gently running your hand over the surface of the vase.
The background is finished in a high polish, dark green enamel in pristine, mint condition without any major faults such as cracks, crazing, hairlines or restoration.
This vase is marked on the base with a metallic foil decal for
    Tutanka
, which is the export brand for
    Hirabayashi
, a well known cloisonne enamel workshop in Japan. This particular variation of the trademark and name is very rare and important as it provides a primary source that confirms the export name of
    Tutanka
    for the
    Hirabayashi
    company.
This technique is discussed in Chapter 6, entitled, “Imbedded Cloisonne Enamel” which explores various examples that incorporate design elements that has been added on top of the foundation.  In many cases, the raised effect serves as the focal point of the work. Refer to "Japanese Cloisonne Enamels; A Private Collector's Notes and Reference Guide," by Gary Yoshino, pages 31 through 40.
As most collectors now know, I originally purchased this vase several years ago as part of my long term efforts to document works that incorporated the many different forms, materials, styles and techniques of Japanese cloisonné enamels.
The height of this impressive vase is approximately 9.5 inches
The width this vase is approximately 6.5 inches
Due to the fragile nature of cloisonné enamels, this item will be double boxed and packed with tremendous care.
Due to the large dimensions of this vase, I am requesting that the successful buyer help offset some of the total cost of shipping this item by USPS Priority Mail with insurance to confirmed addresses within the United States.
Despite possible international shipment delivery delays, we currently are offering this shipment to a known client in Europe.
The International shipment option will end in approximately one week.
