Small loss of lacquer on lip (see photo) that goes down to the porcelain (not chipped or cracked), another 2 little losses of lacquer on the lip, some gentle abrasions around the shoulder, a larger loss at the base (see photo) and two similar but minor losses also along the base. Removed an old repair on the lip. Notice some scattered drops of gold paint that re probably related to that but didn't wish to touch them lest I damage the surface. They are not near any of the painted gold decoration and neither are the previous list of losses. Should be a simple fix if so inclined.

    Description

Listing is for a very fine
    Japanese
    Kodaiji style
    black-lacquer (slightly brown)
vase from the 17th century. If you're reading this you don't require much of a description beyond the condition and photos but what has always fascinated me about this vase (been in my collection for over twenty years) is the early depiction of corn. Seen some Meiji era carvings over the years but not much else and certainly nothing this early. Hope it might fascinate you as well. Decorated with gold sprinkled gold & silver hiramaki-e.
Inner photo of vase to show coiled construction. Loss at lip photo shows undamaged porcelain. Base loss photo shows fabric ground (close-up). Grasshopper close-up because it is very cute, ha.
    CONDITION:
Overall very fine condition considering its age. Any minor losses may have been overlooked as I'm now looking at the close-up photograph and see a little loss above the grasshopper.
SIZE: Vase is a little taller than 9 1/4 inches. About 5 inches wide at the shoulder.
