Description
This superb, massive and very rare Satsuma urn likely dates from the late Edo or early Meiji period, or around 1850 to 1880. It measures 16 inches at its widest point, 17 inches high, 8 3/4 inches at its mouth, and 9 3/4 inches at its base. The urn has a lovely decoration featuring flowers and vines, together with three faux handles depicting a mythological creature. There is also a beautiful brown drip glaze to the piece (see photos). The condition of the urn is very good, with only some lines to the base, possibly cracks from the original firing.
This is one of the rarest and most unusual examples of early Satsuma that I have ever found, after over 40 years as a collector and dealer.
Because of its size and weight, we are offering this piece for pick up only at Route 1 Antiques, our group shop space in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire. Should the successful bidder need directions to the shop, we would of course be happy to provide them.
We are offering this extraordinary piece of Satsuma with an attractive buy-it-now price and a best offer option, in the expectation that it will achieve its appropriate value.
