    Description

You're bidding on a cool, unusual piece of Japanese pottery - a Jardiniere style planter - about 10 1/2" max diameter, 6 1/4" diameter at the footing, and and 9" tall - appears to be Tokoname style redware. The design is what's quite interesting about this piece - it has a raised design, painted black and white, of what appear to be dancers or acrobats. Even stranger, they seem to be emerging from a brazier pot, and dancing their way into a chef's giant bag - so they symbolically represent something, but I have not been able to link this imagery to a legend or story. Nice sort of rope-twist design around both the rim and footing, and geometric design on the rim top. Note that I have no provenance for this piece, and not sure how old it is - I'm guessing maybe circa 1920s.
NOTE - piece does have issues of condition - marks, scuff and soil on the sides - possibly this could be cleaned but I'm not and expert and so did not want to risk damage to the piece by doing it myself. One of the black figures has a couple of small impact dings, and there is a rim chip at the edge and inside of the collar. SEE PHOTOS - SOLD AS IS AS FOUND. No artist or manufacturer marks that I could find.
A fun, quirky piece - please review photos carefully to make your own determination of overall condition and appeal, and don't hesitate to ask any questions prior to bidding - thanks for looking!
